It’s often said that you should never wake a sleeping baby, but one set of parents have uncovered a hilarious way to wake their two-year-old from the deepest slumber—all with the help of his favorite song.
After a busy few days of dance recitals and birthday celebrations, Kinsie Somarriba from North Carolina lay down with her son, Maverick, for some well-earned rest. Somarriba thought the toddler was “completely knocked out” when he fell asleep, but evidently he’s never too tired for his favorite song.
As soon as Maverick heard the remix to “I Like to Move It,” he sat upright and started dancing on the spot. Somarriba couldn’t believe that he went from “full comatose” to fully awake in an instant, telling Regalrumination.com that she “had no idea” he would react in that way.
The clip showing Maverick’s undeniable love for music was (@aliceinkinzland) on May 14, and it’s already gained more than 5.1 million views and over 1 million likes.
“This was the evening after a very long weekend as I’m a dance teacher, and we had our dance recital, and then the next day was his second birthday party,” Somarriba said. “Again, dancing was the highlight for that too. This song was on repeat all weekend, so my husband thought it would be funny to see what he’d do if he heard it in a deep sleep.
“He’s got quite the musical palette, and he loves all genres – anything from Spanish music, to rap, to pop music. We can be anywhere and if music comes on, he’s got to be moving. His love for music and dancing is quite intense.”
Music of any kind can be beneficial to children of all ages as it’s a source of comfort and pleasure. According to the Early Childhood Learning and Knowledge Center (ECLKC), music can support a child’s emotional development and help them to express a range of emotions. It can also aid language development as toddlers will hear new words and be able to remember them from the tune.
But it isn’t just about the singing, because the ECLKC adds that dancing helps with gross motor development by wiggling, clapping, jumping and bouncing. Children are constantly learning about their bodies, so about will strengthen those muscles and teach them all about balance too.
While the video captured the first time Maverick awoke from his sleep just to dance, Somarriba says that it’s happened many times since. If his jam starts playing, he certainly won’t be caught .
When Somarriba shared the video on TikTok, she never imagined that it would go viral, but she’s loved the positive response it received.
She told Regalrumination.com: “I honestly uploaded it because I thought the video was so cute and hilarious, so I just posted it. We love that he loves music just as much as we do and is living his best life every time he hears it come on.”
Social media users loved seeing Maverick get “ready to roll” as soon as he heard his favorite song, leading many people to praise his . The post amassed over 940 comments in just a matter of days, as one person wrote: “He likes to move it move it.”
Another TikTok user joked: “Little man wasted NO time waking up and getting into rhythm.”
While another comment reads: “His abs woke up before he did.”
