The Royal Family isn’t afraid to have some fun when celebrating birthdays.
As Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s oldest child, Prince Archie, turns five today, it appears he won’t be a part of royal birthday traditions. The Royal Family seems to have snubbed Archie publicly as – at the time of writing – they didn’t post a happy birthday message to the tot on any social media account, something they do for royal family members.
Royal author Tom Quinn, who wrote various books on The Firm, told The Mirror: “Archie is definitely missing out on some rather sweet Royal birthday traditions – because the family is never short of money they don’t buy each other expensive gifts.”
About the family not buying expensive gifts, Tom said: “That would just be too easy and pointless as every member of the family has enough money to buy any and everything they want.”
“Instead, whenever it is someone’s birthday, there is a royal race to find the funniest, silliest present – Kate probably holds the record for the most amusing present,” the author revealed.
One of her most amusing gifts went to her future brother-in-law, Prince Harry. Tom said: “A few years before he met Meghan, Kate bought Harry a ‘how to grow your own girlfriend’ kit!”
“The fun of buying cheap, amusing presents for each other has always shown the lighter side of the Royal Family and it’s sad Archie won’t get to experience this,” he added.
Archie was born on May 6, 2019 – two years before his parents welcomed his younger sister, Princess Lilibet, two. Unlike previous royal births, Buckingham Palace announced the birth with a framed notice on an easel instead of an immediate photocall at the hospital steps.
Though Harry and Meghan stepped back from their roles as working royals in 2020, the palace wished them happy birthdays until 2022 when it was reported that the family wouldn’t do this anymore for non-working royals. When Archie was born at Portland Hospital in London, Harry said that his son’s birth was “the most amazing experience I could ever have possibly imagined.”
