During their visit to Nigeria, Meghan and Harry received a variety of gifts from local residents, deviating from the traditional royal protocol. However, accepting these gifts contradicts the rules that prohibit working members of the royal family from receiving gifts that might create obligations to the donors.
There are exceptions for small, non-controversial gifts such as flowers, food, and books, as long as they cost less than £150. The royal family keeps a strict record of all official gifts presented to them. As Meghan and Harry are no longer working members of the royal family, having stepped down in 2020, they are not bound by these rules and have been happily accepting gifts during their time in Nigeria.
Upon their arrival in Nigeria, the Sussexes were presented with two paintings, one of which portrayed Harry with his late mother, Princess Diana, on the day they watched a sitting volleyball match at the Abuja-based charity organization called Nigeria Unconquered, which supports wounded, injured, and sick service members.
Megan also received a lovely artwork from a young girl, depicting animals and flowers. They were each given personalized t-shirts with slogans reflecting their aspirations.
During a reception at the Nigerian defense headquarters in Abuja, Meghan and Harry were gifted with traditional Nigerian outfits. However, according to an anonymous insider, Megan’s reaction to the gift was not genuine. It was claimed in a blind item that she pretended to be happy while receiving the gift, but later discarded them to her assistant and security guards at a low price. The insider alleged that Megan’s true focus is on money and jewelry like gold and diamonds.
The insider further criticized Megan, suggesting that if she truly considered Nigeria as her home, she should use the title bestowed upon her instead of the one she claims to dislike. The insider also accused her of regifting the traditional outfits given to her by her assistants, implying her lack of appreciation for the Nigerian culture.
It is worth noting that upon returning to any place outside of Africa, Megan continues to use the Sussex title rather than the African title given to her. This behavior, as claimed by the insider, sheds light on her true feelings toward her own race, which may be in contrast to her public image.
Furthermore, Megan faced criticism for offering what some considered backward advice to girls in Nigeria. During an event, she shared her personal journey of becoming a princess but failed to mention that her status as a princess was solely a result of marrying a prince. Some critics found her message contradictory and nonsensical, suggesting that she implied one needed to marry into royalty to become a princess, disregarding the fact that Princess Angela of Liechtenstein married her husband years before Megan did.
