Lorraine Kelly weighed in on the latest royal news on Monday’s show, where chat got onto King Charles III and Prince Andrew.
To start the week, Lorraine, 64, spoke to The Times’ Royal editor Kate Mansey about the latest headlines, which included: “Can the King evict Andrew from Royal Lodge?”
This prompted Lorraine to comment: “It’s so interesting, the two of them, that relationship between the two of them. You know everyone always bangs on about the fact Andrew’s the Queen’s favourite, I mean, that must be horrible for Charles, ‘favourite son’, I think, for Charles and for Edward as well but Charles especially, I mean, do they get on? There’s a biggish gap!”
Royal expert Kate then replied: “There’s a 11 year age gap. I think this is quite interesting and something I explore in my podcast, The Royals, we’ve got Harry and William are the ones we always talk about the brothers falling out. But here we have the heir and the spare, again…”
Kate then claimed that due to Andrew being the “spare”, the late Queen Elizabeth II was more indulgent towards her son, especially after having more time due to establishing herself in her reign and was able to “lavish a bit more attention” on Andrew, who was also allowed more freedom as a “spare”.
She added: “I remember Charles saying once, years ago: ‘Well, Andrew was the one with the Robert Redford good looks in the family.’ So there’s definitely a frisson there!” It comes as Prince Andrew has been spotted breaking cover amid reports King Charles is threatening to completely cut ties with him. The Duke of York was seen looking tense while out on a horse ride near his Windsor home earlier today (Monday 3 June).
Wearing a burgundy shirt, he was joined by a companion as they exercised their horses just days after reports the monarch is urging his disgraced brother once again to leave his 30-room Royal Lodge home. The Duke of York, 64, is understood to have a long lease on the Royal Lodge. But the King is ultimately responsible for all of the royal household’s finances, and so could choose to restrict funds from him – meaning he could soon struggle to meet the extortionate annual upkeep costs of the Grade II-listed property.
King Charles also currently funds Andrew’s security bill, which costs £3million a year. Andrew’s persistent refusal to take up the new property after previous requests is reported to have frustrated Charles.
A royal source told The Times: “The King’s kindness is not without limit and there is a very good option for Andrew to move into Frogmore Cottage, recently vacated by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, which also has the benefit of being within the Windsor Castle security cordon hence reducing the need for alternative round-the-clock security for Royal Lodge.” The source added that Andrew is “taking longer than desirable” to “recognise the reality of the situation”.
But Andrew is so far shows no sign of budging. One acquaintance of the Duke of York told the newspaper that he is likely to “dig in” if the stand-off continues and that he had already enjoyed a “stay of execution” in light of Sarah Ferguson and the King’s own recent illnesses.
