Prince William compared watching England’s quarter final victory over Switzerland as like watching his beloved Aston Villa, according to a lip reader.
The heir to the throne and FA President travelled to Dusseldorf today to support Gareth Southgate’s side for the second time during the tournament. The Prince of Wales was in the stands to see England draw 1-1 with Denmark in Frankfurt during the group stage but this time was present for a win, as they won on penalties.
Now lip reader Nicola Hickling has told the Mirror revealed the Prince was feeling the pressure way before the Three Lions stepped up to take their penalties. During the game the Prince said to a nearby pal: “That’s not ideal.” The man responded: “I feel drained after that.” The Prince replied: “I feel that way when we watch Aston Villa.”
Earlier, an expert had claimed was showing “angst” even ahead of kick off in Germany, which finally ended 1-1 after extra time before going to the dreaded penalty shootout. Body language expert Judi James told the Mirror: “There were some moments before the game started some of the angst and frustration of the England team’s last few games seemed reflected in William’s facial expression, with some lip-pursing, clenched teeth and a furrow-browed frown.
“As he got chatting to the officials around him he appeared to revert to a more chirpy non-verbal banter mode, curling his hands into fists to mime what looked like a driving gesture or leaning to talk to someone behind him with a very impish facial expression.
By the time the teams came out he was standing upright with his hands clasped in front of his torso and a grin of excitement and anticipation on his face.”
The Prince of Wales visited the England team’s training ground at St George’s Park in Burton-upon-Trent before the squad flew out to Germany. During his visit, William shared with the players a pep talk words of wisdom from son Louis.
He said: “Guys, while I was on the way here, I was thinking what shall I say. And I thought what can I offer as you are all an experienced team here with Gareth and I was thinking what could I say to help before you went away?
“I was on the school run this morning with the children and I said ‘what shall I say to the England team today’. The best bit of advice I got was to eat twice the amount you would normally eat. And I now have visions of all of you running around with massive tummies and getting stitches on the pitch. So I think take my youngest’s advice with a pinch of salt!”
However, when asked about Louis’ suggestion to eat twice as much food to prepare for the tournament, England captain Harry Kane jokingly said: “I don’t think our nutritionist will be happy with that advice.”
