Tom Bower, an esteemed investigative journalist and author, garnered significant attention in our royal watching community with the release of his book “Revenge: Megan, Harry, and the War Between the Windsors” in July 2022. This instant international bestseller promised an explosive tell-all, reportedly making Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, uneasy. Bower delves into Markle’s journey from a minor actress to a figure powerful enough to unsettle the British royal family.
Now, Bower turns his focus to the Beckham family in “The House of Beckham: Money, Sex, and Power”. In part one of our interview with Tom Bower, we explore the dynamics between these world-famous couples and former friends.
Victoria Beckham appears to be a more discerning judge of character. At what point did she see the Sussexes as a liability to the Beckham brand?
“It’s a mixed view. When Meghan first arrived in London in 2016, and later in 2018 when she reached out to Victoria for free clothes, Victoria was initially impressed. Meghan’s fashion sense could sell out anything she wore. However, Meghan also sought compensation, which contravened royal protocols. This created a rift. Additionally, David Beckham’s snub by Prince Harry during the Invictus Games in Sydney, where Harry allegedly didn’t want the Beckhams overshadowing him in the media, fueled tensions.”
The Beckhams are known for their strategic media control. What could the Sussexes learn from them in handling media manipulation?
“The Sussexes have tried media manipulation, notably with their Netflix and Oprah interviews. However, Meghan’s statements during these interviews were widely criticized for their inaccuracies. In contrast, the Beckhams have navigated media scrutiny skillfully for decades, sustaining their image and brand effectively.”
Prince Harry is participating in a documentary about phone hacking. Is it hypocritical, given their own media controversies?
“Absolutely. Prince Harry’s involvement in such a documentary exacerbates his strained relationship with the media. His accusations against the media contradict his mother, Princess Diana’s, own media strategies. This hypocrisy undermines public sympathy towards him.”
Do Prince Harry and Meghan regret their treatment of the Beckhams? Would they seek reconciliation?
“They likely do regret it. The Sussexes’ actions often alienate potential allies, reflecting their own missteps and naivety. They started with immense public sympathy but have lost it due to repeated missteps.”
Considering your expertise, would you consider writing about the Kardashians’ media strategies?
“Certainly! The Kardashians have mastered creating and sustaining a brand based on image rather than reality. They excel at manipulating media attention, which Victoria Beckham has also sought to emulate in her own career.”
Tom Bower’s insights into these high-profile relationships underscore how strategic media handling can shape public perception and personal legacies.
