Swift broke her own rules when she decided that all of her tracks would be “fair game” for surprise songs on the Eras Tour.
The “Delicate” singer has a segment during her shows where she plays an acoustic set of a song or two that are not on the set list. Swifties eagerly track which songs she has performed and debate what might be coming up next.
The star previously announced that she would only play each song once as a surprise on tour unless she messed them up in some way.
But as she hit the stage in São Paulo on November 26, 2023, she said she was changing it up. The concert was her last for 2023 and she announced that when she resumed the tour in 2024 all of her songs would be on the table.
“I decided that in 2024, when we go back on tour, I’m just going to open back up all the songs for surprise songs,” she said. “I feel like, for one year, we have really gotten through a lot of songs, so I’m just going to make all the songs fair game when we go back on tour. There’s some songs that I still really, really want to play, so I’m going to try and get through all of them.”
Swift had already rewritten her rule book once, when she said during a show in April 2023 that she was allowed to perform surprise songs more than once if they were from her 2022 album Midnights.
“A little caveat to the rule, which is that if it’s on Midnights, I can do it however many times I want because Midnights is, like, the most accurate picture of my life to date. It’s the most recent album, I feel really connected to it, I feel really proud of it. If I want to do songs from Midnights more than once on this tour I will,” the singer told fans.
