Swift was left “devastated” after a fan died before one of her concerts in Brazil.

Ana Clara Benevides Machado, who was 23, died on November 17, 2023, after becoming unwell before Swift’s show at the Nilton Santos Olympic Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. It was later determined that she died of heat exhaustion, with temperatures reaching 102 F amid a heat wave. The heat index, a measure of how hot it actually feels to the human body when considering the air temperature and the relative humidity, reached 138 F that day.

“I can’t believe I’m writing these words but it is with a shattered heart that I say we lost a fan earlier tonight before my show. I can’t even tell you how devastated I am by this. There’s very little information I have other than the fact that she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young,” Swift wrote on .

The singer added that it was the last thing she thought would happen on her tour and that she wouldn’t be able to speak about it on stage because she was “overwhelmed by grief” when she tried to talk about it.

“I want to say now I feel this loss deeply and my broken heart goes out to her family and friends,” she posted on Instagram.

In December 2023, it was reported that post-mortem examinations suggested that Benevides Machado had died of heat exhaustion.

Swift was reported to have reached out to Benevides Machado’s loved ones after her death. A , formerly , in late November 2023 showed the “Anti-Hero” singer backstage with some of the psychology student’s relatives at her final Brazil tour stop in São Paulo. Benevides Machado’s family were wearing T-shirts emblazoned with her picture.
