Context
The 49-year-old artist, known for her eccentric stage presence and powerful songwriting, has received nine Grammy nominations, including five for her 2014 hit “Chandelier.”
Known for her private personal life, it remains unclear when or how Sia and Bernard first met. They legally married in December 2022 and later held an intimate ceremony in Portofino, Italy, in May 2023.
Sia was previously married to filmmaker Erik Anders Lang from 2014 to 2017.
What to Know About Sia’s Personal Life
Sia has spoken openly about her struggles with mental health, substance abuse and bipolar disorder, revealing that she once battled addiction to alcohol and painkillers before achieving sobriety.
Sia has also been candid about living with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a connective tissue disorder, and has used her platform to advocate for mental health awareness and self-acceptance. Preferring to shield herself from the pressures of celebrity, she famously obscures her face with wigs and disguises during public appearances to maintain a sense of normalcy in her private life.
In 2020, she revealed that she had adopted two teenage boys who were aging out of the foster care system. She has also been a generous supporter of various causes, including animal rights, LGBTQ+ advocacy and addiction recovery programs.
Sia’s Music Career
Sia Furler’s music career spans decades, evolving from indie pop beginnings to global superstardom. She first gained recognition in the late 1990s as the lead vocalist for the Australian jazz-funk band Crisp before launching her solo career with the 1997 album OnlySee.
Her breakthrough came with Colour the Small One (2004), which featured the melancholic ballad “Breathe Me,” gaining widespread recognition after being featured in the finale of Six Feet Under. Over the years, she transitioned from an alternative singer-songwriter to one of the most sought-after pop hitmakers, penning chart-topping songs for artists such as Rihanna, Beyoncé, Katy Perry and Britney Spears.
Despite initially preferring to work behind the scenes, Sia’s own solo success skyrocketed with the release of 1000 Forms of Fear (2014), which included the mega-hit “Chandelier.” Her signature vocal style, emotive lyricism, and theatrical performances—often featuring dancer Maddie Ziegler—defined her unique artistic identity. She followed up with This Is Acting (2016), a collection of songs originally written for other artists, and the hit single “Cheap Thrills,” which became her first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Over the years, Sia has continued to push boundaries, venturing into film with the controversial musical drama Music and experimenting with genre-blending sounds on her later projects.
