An unearthed letter has shed light on the late Queen Elizabeth II’s views regarding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s security situation post-Megxit. After the couple resigned as frontline royals in early 2020, Meghan and Harry said goodbye to various royal privileges, not least automatic police protection whilst in the UK.

A letter has surfaced from a legal battle he is embroiled in, written by his late grandmother’s private secretary Sir Edward Young. The correspondence stated: “You will understand well that ensuring that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain safe is of paramount importance to Her Majesty and her family.”

The letter also said: “Given the Duke’s public profile by virtue of being born into the Royal Family, his military service, the Duchess’s own independent profile, and the well-documented history of targeting of the Sussex family by extremists, it is imperative that the family continues to be provided with effective security.”

Furthermore, Sir Edward’s note acknowledged the Queen knew the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC) would make their own independent decision about Harry and Meghan’s protection, yet it was made clear that she found it crucial they still have suitable security measures in place.

The letter was revealed in a ruling by Mr Justice Nicklin in a libel case that Harry launched against Associated Newspapers Limited over a Mail on Sunday article from 2022. The piece discussed Harry’s legal fight with the Home Office regarding his security measures.

Prince Harry opened up about his security struggle, which kicked off in 2020, in a documentary called Tabloids on Trial that aired on ITV in which The Duke expressed his concerns about bringing his young family to the UK. The 39 year old hinted that these worries were why his wife hasn’t been back to the UK and why they haven’t brought their children to his homeland since 2022. It has been speculated that Prince Harry may return alone to the UK for the funeral of his beloved uncle, Lord Robert Fellowes, who died last week, although it could be an awkward occasion as his estranged brother Prince William would also be present.

In an interview with OK!, former royal reporter Jennie Bond said: “I imagine Harry will want to be at his uncle’s funeral…. but his presence would cause all sorts of awkwardness if William attends too,” she said. “It would be nice to think, though, that two grown-up men could at least be in the same space…. as they were at the coronation, albeit briefly…. without ruining an occasion of great sadness and solemnity.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex currently live in the US, where they’ve resided since 2020. They relocated a few months after stepping down from Royal duties with their now-five year old son, Archie. Their daughter Lilibet, who is now three, was born in June 2021.
