It’s been six years since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tied the knot, and in that time their relationships with the royal family have all but broken down.
But prior to the wedding, the Firm all rallied around as the couple faced media scrutiny surrounding Meghan’s father. It was revealed that Thomas Markle had staged paparazzi photographs ahead of the big day, before suffering a heart attack, meaning he could not attend. Instead, King Charles offered to step in and walked Meghan partially down the aisle.
A short time later, Queen Camilla was asked about the wedding – and made a cryptic comment, seemingly referring to the unpredictable pre-ceremony dramas. She said: “It was such a lovely day. Just everything went right. We all wondered whatever would happen next, and then everything went right. The only thing is that we are all losing our voices now.”
The royal continued: “It’s nice to have something that is uplifting rather than depressing. Everything was just perfect, including the weather, which couldn’t have been better. It was a beautiful day.” It comes after Zara Tindall shared her insights into Harry and Meghan’s big day, and admitted she was incredibly uncomfortable for one simple reason.
At the time, Zara was heavily pregnant with her second child, daughter Lena, and speaking to the Daily Telegraph , Zara confessed that her unborn baby had been “kicking the hell out of her”. She said: “I was uncomfortable! My bum sort of slid over either side and Lena kicked the hell out of me for an hour. It just wasn’t comfy at all and it probably showed on my face.”
During the ceremony, Bishop Michael Curry also delivered an energetic speech – which lasted a whopping 13 minutes. “It was just the general amount of time everything was taking,” added Zara. “I think my face was probably caught the point when I thought ‘Right he’s going to finish now’ and then he went off on another little story and it was like, “Really?'”
Meanwhile, Meghan and Harry opened up about their royal wedding in honour of the exhibit A Royal Wedding: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, which was held at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Scotland. The couple personally recorded the exhibition’s audio guide, so guests could hear from the royal bride and groom themselves about the big day And although there were about 600 guests present for the nuptials at St. George’s Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle, Meghan spoke about the importance of personal touches.
“A great level of detail went into the planning of our wedding day,” she said on the recording. “We knew how large the scale of the event would be, so in making choices that were really personal and meaningful, it could make the whole experience feel intimate.”
Meghan wore a gown by Clare Waight Keller, along with a veil decorated with commonwealth flowers and a scrap of fabric from the dress she wore during her first date with Harry. Meanwhile, Harry chatted about the significance of his own wedding outfit.
“I chose the frock coat as a uniform, with permission from my grandmother, because I think it’s one of the smartest Household Cavalry uniforms,” he said in the guide. “It’s one of my favourites, and I was very fortunate to be able to wear that on the day.”
