History of the William Poster Rumor
Robert Jobson outlined the origin of the rumor in his book, Catherine, the Princess of Wales: A Biography: “There were reports that Catherine had a schoolgirl crush on Prince William when he was at Eton College, and her former housemate Jessica Hay even claimed she had a picture of him on her wall at school.
“During the ITV interview with Tom Bradby to mark their engagement, however, Catherine firmly quashed this rumor,” Jobson wrote.
Jessica Hay made the claim in an interview with journalist Sean Smith for his biography Kate, which suggested the during her early school career.
However, Hay later told the U.K. newspaper Daily Mail she had been misquoted: “I found it quite unfair. I didn’t even get any payment for it. My friends are going to be thinking, ‘She’s sold herself out.'”
The Mail quoted Smith rebutting this allegation: “This was a recorded interview with Jessica, and she has not been misquoted.”
