Kate Middleton and Prince William have hired a new director for their foundation, weeks after the Princess of Wales announced she will slowly be returning to work amidst her battle with cancer.
The Prince and Princess have recruited Sir David John Lewis to be a trustee for their Royal Foundation, according to GB News. Once the boss of Tesco, Sir David, who was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2021, has joined the board of Trustees. It’s likely Sir David will be working with the couple on their charitable initiatives, which include campaigns in homelessness, addiction and Kate Middleton’s Early Years development work.
The decision by the couple to recruit the new trustee to their board appears to be a positive step forward for the Prince and Princess, who had earlier this year called off their hunt for a new Chief Executive Officer for the Royal Household. The newly-created position would have involved overseeing roughly 60 staff and was considered revolutionary as the holder would not be subordinate to Private Secretaries. Speaking to Richard Eden, a Palace spokesperson explained: ‘With everything going on, the Royal Household’s focus is on the Princess’s recovery, so no appointment has been made.’
Since then, the Princess has said she ‘hopes’ to appear at a number of royal engagements this summer and even made her return to public life at Trooping the Colour.
The Princess of Wales last month said she has been ‘making good progress’ but will continue having treatment over ‘a few more months’, detailing, ‘On the days I feel well enough, it is a joy to engage with school life, spend personal time on the things that give me energy and positivity, as well as starting to do a little work from home.’
After confirming she would be attending the King’s birthday parade, she went on to explain she is ‘not out of the woods yet’ but ‘hopes to join a few public engagements over the summer.’ Among the highlights of the summer months which could be a potential outing for the Princess? Wimbledon, of course.
The Princess of Wales, Patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, often attends the tournament in SW19 on multiple days each year. Kate Middleton is a keen tennis fan and an accomplished tennis player in her own right, making the two-week tournament an unmissable date in her summer diary. Last year, she made it a real family affair as she was joined by Prince George and Princess Charlotte at the contest.
