It’s been a whirlwind of change for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle since they said goodbye to their Royal duties all the way back in 2020 for a new life in the United States, with numerous reports suggesting they’ve left behind not just their roles but also a raft of friends and family members back in Britain.

Royal watchers have been pondering the price of the Duke of Sussex’s move to America, ever since he decided to step back from life as a working royal, with many of his long-standing friendships having taken the hit in pursuit of a quiet family life. Speaking to OK!, ex-BBC Royal correspondent Jennie Bond sympathised with the situation, as she explained: “I think we can say that it must be tough for Harry to have lost touch with virtually all his old circle of friends as well as his family.”

According to Jennie, however, Harry likely reckons the personal losses are balanced out by the delight of his new life: “But we must assume that he feels that sacrifice is worth it for the life he now has with the woman he loves and the children he adores.”

Yet while Jennie is of the opinion that Harry feels the trade-off was worth it, one royal commentator has a very different opinion of the situation, even suggesting that the Prince is “bored” of his new life, without his nearest and dearest to help expand his social circle.

Author and Royal expert Tom Quinn told the Mirror: “Harry on the other hand is increasingly bored and looking back across the Atlantic where most of his army and school friends still live and whom he never sees because they won’t visit him in the States because they find Meghan difficult.”

Since moving to the United States for a more private life away from the royal spotlight, the Sussexes initially hoped to focus on their young family while also pursuing projects close to their heart.

Meghan in particular has been extremely busy in recent weeks, working on a new series of her Archetypes podcast, launching her own lifestyle brand American Riviera Orchard, and filming her upcoming Netflix series which will showcase some of her own culinary flair. Prince Harry too has been hard at work promoting the Invictus Games, along with several other projects including his own documentary series, which could have made maintaining contact with his pals harder due to a jam-packed schedule.

Distance may also play a key role in his strained friendships, with the Sussexes currently living around 5,500 miles away from their former UK home at Frogmore Cottage. The couple famously moved out of the Windsor property back in 2020, and swapped the leafy greenery of Berkshire, for the sun-soaked hills of Montecito, California instead.

While many of Harry’s friendships haven’t survived the move, some connections are still going strong, such as the Duke’s longstanding friendship with Nacho Figueras, arguably the most famous polo player in the world.
