In a new development, Prince Harry has been granted the opportunity to appeal his High Court defeat over police protection in the UK, according to a recent report. The Duke of Sussex had previously taken legal action against the Home Office regarding a decision made by the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (Ravec) in February 2020.
Harry was informed that he would no longer be provided with the “same degree” of publicly-funded protection when visiting the UK.
Harry’s lawyers argued that he had been “singled out” and treated “less favourably” by the body. At the time, a spokesman for the Duke of Sussex stated that he would appeal the decision, emphasizing that he was “not asking for preferential treatment, but for a fair and lawful application of Ravec’s own rules.”
However, in a further setback, retired High Court judge Sir Peter Lane rejected the duke’s case in February, concluding that Ravec’s approach was neither irrational nor procedurally unfair.
Nonetheless, it appears that Harry has now been granted the green light to challenge Sir Peter’s dismissal at the Court of Appeal. According to an order by Lord Justice Bean dated May 23, the Court of Appeal has agreed to hear Harry’s challenge following a direct application from his legal team.
This latest development represents a potential opportunity for the Duke of Sussex to continue his fight for the level of security he believes he and his family require when visiting the UK. As the legal proceedings progress, the public will be closely watching to see how this high-profile case unfolds.
