Prince Harry is likely seething over the negative reception to his tell-all memoir, according to royal commentators.
Nearly a year and a half after the release of Prince Harry’s explosive book, Spare, there’s still no paperback version on the shelves, sparking speculation among royal insiders.
Rebecca English, the Daily Mail’s Royal editor, said Harry has been met with “massive personal backlash” for airing the Royal Family’s dirty laundry in such a public way.
The Mail on Sunday’s editor-at-large, Charlotte Griffiths, believed the Duke of Sussex was “furious” with the public for not embracing his narrative as he had hoped.
On the Palace Confidential podcast, Griffiths remarked: “I don’t think he regrets writing it. I know he…he found the process incredibly cathartic, and I don’t think he regrets that.”
She added: “But yes, of course he’ll regret how it was received, but the blame won’t be on himself because I just don’t think he has that self-awareness.”
Griffiths went on to say: “He’ll be furious with all of us, with everybody else for…for not reacting in the way that he wanted. But you know what – what did he expect, honestly?”
She concluded with the observation that Harry probably felt justified in telling his story, yet couldn’t handle the backlash: “I think he thought he had every right to share his views, tell his side of the story. But he just can’t bear the way that people reacted to it.”
Rebecca revealed she recently reached out to Penguin Random House, the publishers behind Spare, inquiring about their future plans. She was informed that they had “no announcements to make at the moment”.
The editor, who was promised to be kept “in the loop”, pressed on to find out if a paperback edition had been confirmed by the publisher, to which it replied, “No, we haven’t”.
Rebecca later expressed her curiosity: “It does make me wonder whether he will plan to bring another one out because if he does, he surely would have to include an updated chapter like these paperbacks do. And maybe he’s just realised it’s not worth it for him to go that way.”
Harry has admitted that Prince William and King Charles “wouldn’t ever forgive” him should he opt to pen a sequel.
He acknowledged having plenty of content for another book but is allegedly hesitating due to the potential of causing more distress within the Royal Family.
It comes after a candid Netflix documentary series and a bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, where Harry and Meghan levelled accusations of racism and bullying against the royal household.
Nonetheless, it was the disclosures in Spare that particularly caused uproar. Harry alleged that his brother, Prince William, physically attacked him during a dispute and that King Charles was ill-equipped for fatherhood.
