The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s decision to step down as senior royals in 2020 has had a profound impact on their relationships within the Royal Family. While Meghan Markle appears to have moved on from her time in the monarchy, focusing on new endeavors in the United States, Prince Harry is said to be deeply saddened by the emotional separation between him and his brother, Prince William.
According to royal author Tom Quinn, Meghan has managed to move past the drama to a greater extent, as her time as a senior royal was relatively brief compared to her husband’s lifelong connection to the institution. “She’s the main driver for their commercial enterprises in the States, where, having taken the dog for a walk each morning, Harry has a little to do beyond brooding over the past,” Quinn told The Mirror.
However, the rift between the brothers remains a source of deep pain for the Duke of Sussex. He has made small steps to try and mend the fractured relationship, traveling to the UK in February to meet with King Charles after the monarch’s cancer diagnosis. The pair even enjoyed a 30-minute conversation, but subsequent attempts to reunite with both Charles and William have been unsuccessful.
Quinn previously revealed that Harry is devastated by the estrangement from his brother and the lack of a relationship between his own children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, and their cousins, George, Charlotte, and Louis. “Harry and Meghan would love to get round the problem – they would love it if the cousins could meet regularly and have a positive relationship as they grow up, but they cannot see a way to do it while they themselves, Harry and Meghan, are estranged,” the author explained.
As the Duke and Duchess of Sussex continue to navigate their new path, the emotional toll of the rift with the Royal Family remains a constant challenge for Prince Harry, even as Meghan appears to have found a way to move forward and focus on the future.
