Prince Harry kicked off a on Sunday where he attended a dinner hosted by the World Health Organization () highlighting, “Violence against children and its impact on mental health.”
The prince was not the most senior royal in attendance, as the event also played host to Queen Mathilde of Belgium, who was accompanied by the country’s Prime Minister, Alexander De Croo.
Harry and Mathilde were photographed greeting one another with a customary kiss on the cheek at the event. The royals have both attended a number of key ceremonies and meetings over the years since the queen’s husband, King Philippe, came to the Belgian throne in 2013.
Most recently, both the king and queen were present alongside other world royals and Harry at the in London in 2023.
Harry is distantly related to the Belgian royal family through Queen Victoria, whose uncle, Prince Leopold I of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, became King of the Belgians in 1831.
The WHO dinner was also attended by the organization’s director-general, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Hollywood actors, Forest Whitaker and Will Poulter.
The prince’s wife, , is not believed to have accompanied him for the trip.
The event is just one of many appearances that Harry will make in New York City during the General Assembly High-Level Week and Climate Week.
During his stay, Harry will connect with a number of the key organizations he has continued to take a working interest in since his split from the monarchy in 2020 and move to the U.S.
Two of these have a core link to the prince’s late mother, , who herself regularly attended charity events and ceremonies in New York prior to her tragic death at the age of 36 in 1997 when Harry was just 12 years old.
During his stay, Harry will attend events connected with the HALO Trust and the Diana Award. The princess brought anti-landmine and humanitarian aid organization, the HALO Trust, to international attention in 1997 just months before her death, when she was photographed walking through a live minefield in Angola, Africa, wearing body armor with its logo attached.
The princess’ main humanitarian output in the final months of her life was campaigning to end the international manufacture, sale and deployment of anti-personnel landmines in warzones.
Harry has since continued his mother’s working relationship with the charity.
While in New York, the prince will also take part in a panel discussion with the Diana Award at the Concordia Annual Summit.
The award is the only charity officially named in honor of Diana and seeks to promote youth leadership initiatives.
Both Harry and have strong relationships with the charity, with both regularly taking part in the annual awards ceremony each year in some capacity.
In addition to these organizations, Harry will also undertake engagements connected with conservation charity African Parks and his eco-travel resource, Travalyst while in New York.
The prince is not the only royal to have eco-events scheduled to take place during New York Climate Week and the 79th Session of the U.N. General Assembly.
Prince William’s Earthshot Prize , co-hosted by Philanthropies, which will announce the shortlist of finalists for the prizes which will be handed out in South Africa later this year.
The event will be led by former New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and though William attended in 2023, he will not make an in-person appearance this year.
