The latest battle in the war of the Windsors is taking place around the wedding of William and Harry’s mutual friend, Hugh Grosvenor. The 7th Duke of Westminster is due to marry his fiance Olivia Henson at Chester Cathedral on June 7.

The 33-year-old aristocrat is godfather to both Prince George and Prince Archie and he was a guest when Prince Harry tied the knot with Meghan Markle at Windsor Castle in May 2018. He has invited both brothers to what promises to be the biggest society wedding of the year.

But while the Prince of Wales will be attending as an usher, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have declined the invitation. Sources say they want to avoid any “awkwardness” with William still not prepared to forgive his younger brother for what he sees as multiple betrayals.

Hugh has an estimated fortune of £10.1billion, which makes him the UK’s 15th richest person according to the latest Sunday Times Rich List. As an only son, he leapfrogged his two older sisters to inherit his titles and the lion’s share of the family’s vast wealth at the age of 25 when his father died in August 2016.

Asked how young entrepreneurs could succeed in Britain, his late father – Gerald Grosvenor, the 6th Duke – once replied: “Make sure they have an ancestor who was a very close friend of William the Conqueror.”

The Grosvenor Estate includes around 140,000 acres of land across England and Scotland, including some 300 acres in London’s Mayfair and Belgravia which makes up the bulk of the family fortune. It also includes land in Lancashire and Cheshire.

North of the border, the duke owns the 95,000 acre Reay Forest Estate in Sutherland making him the sixth largest private landowner in Scotland. The stunning estate includes the famous peaks of Ben Stack, Arkle and Foinaven, as well as six Sites of Special Scientific Interest, two Special Areas of Conservation for rare habitats and one Special Protection Area for endangered birds.

Lochmore Lodge on the estate was once a lavish Highland holiday home visited by the likes of King Charles and Princess Diana, as well as Queen Elizabeth, Winston Churchill and Coco Chanel. After it failed to sell at a knockdown price, it has been converted into an estate archive and residential accommodation.

Hugh reportedly blew £5million on his 21st birthday party at Eaton Hall, the family seat in Cheshire. Prince Harry was among the guests who were entertained by comedian Michael McIntyre and the hip-hop band Rizzle Kicks, as well as a colossal fireworks display.
