It’s been reported by the FBI that the man who tried to assassinate Donald Trump also researched the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton – and now, according to one royal expert, Harry and Meghan could also be under threat.

Jennie Bond said there have been “countless occasions” when “people have scaled the walls around Buckingham Palace” or even got into the Palace, including the Queen’s bedroom.

The former BBC royal correspondent exclusively told OK!: “Security threats are a fact of life for the Royal family and Prince Harry is an even more obvious target because of his military record. Plus, the fact that he has written about the number of Taliban fighters he has killed in action.

“His concerns about security for himself and his family are legitimate and the bill they face for their private protection in the States must be enormous. But that is something they must have understood when they decided to leave royal life and the UK.

It obviously means that they have to earn a lot of money, but they are not alone in facing these security threats. Countless A-list celebrities have to employ bodyguards – such is the sad state of society these days.”

OK! has contacted Harry and Meghan’s reps for comment.

It’s also noteworthy that Prince Harry suffered a loss in his ongoing legal battle this year over police protection in the UK, after his initial bid to appeal a High Court ruling was rejected.

The Duke of Sussex was appealing against a decision in February 2020 by the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (RAVEC) to remove his publicly-funded protection when he is in the country. RAVEC’s decision came as a result of a change in the duke’s official “status” after he stopped being a “full-time working member of the royal family”, a judge heard.

However, retired High Court judge Sir Peter Lane dismissed Harry’s claim that he had been “singled out” and treated “less favourably” by the decision, ruling that RAVEC’s approach was not irrational or procedurally unfair.

At a previous hearing the court heard a written statement from Harry which revealed his security concerns: “It was with great sadness for both of us that my wife and I felt forced to step back from this role and leave the country in 2020. The UK is my home.

“The UK is central to the heritage of my children and a place I want them to feel at home, as much as where they live at the moment in the United States. That cannot happen if it’s not possible to keep them safe when they are on UK soil. I cannot put my wife in danger like that and, given my experiences in life, I am reluctant to unnecessarily put myself in harm’s way too.”
