Several Facebook users claim that Nigeria’s first lady Oluremi Tinubu criticised Meghan Markle for her choice of dress during her visit to Nigeria in May 2024.
Part of one post, dated 2 June, reads: “Oluremi Tinubu, First Lady of Nigeria, criticizes Meghan Markle on her visit to Nigeria, wearing an open back dress.”
Markle and her husband, Prince Harry, made a three-day visit to Nigeria. The trip was to promote Harry’s Invictus Games Foundation by meeting with wounded soldiers and visiting local charities. Nigeria became the first African country to join the Invictus “community of nations” in 2022.

Some posts include a video of Tinubu talking about dressing “appropriately” in Nigeria, and a photo of Markle in an open-back dress that she was wearing when they arrived in the country.
In the video, Tinubu says: “We see the way they dress and they keep forgetting that in Nigeria, we are beautiful … We’re not having a met gala and everyone’s nakedness is just everywhere. The men are well-clothed, so we have to do something … We don’t accept nakedness in our culture. They’re trying to emulate film stars from America, they don’t know where they come from. Why did Meghan come here looking for Africa?”
But did Tinubu criticise Markle’s choice of clothes? We checked.
