Nick Cannon reflected on his marriage with Mariah Carey in a candid new interview.
The former couple were married from 2008 to 2016 and share two children together, 13-year-old twins Monroe and Moroccan.
In a new interview with the Ray Daniels Presents podcast, the Wild ‘N Out host, 44, admitted he faced insecurities over Mariah, 55, being the ‘alpha’ in their relationship.
While Cannon spoke highly of Carey, he stated he started to second guess his career accomplishments at the time and wondered if the reason he was given a position at Island Def Jam was due to his marriage.
‘I got married in my 20s, you know what I mean? To the biggest star in the world,’ he explained.
‘My trajectory was here,’ he said, pointing his hand in an upward motion.
However, he said Mariah was ‘already in a different stratosphere.’
The relationship caused Cannon to self-reflect as he grew accustomed to Mariah’s lavish lifestyle.
‘I would lay up at night thinking “Is this who I am? Am I Mariah’s man? Is that what my life is supposed to be?” There’s nothing wrong with it! And I got really comfortable with it!
‘She’s got islands and I’m waking up at noon and people bringing me steaks on a platter,’ he said.
But Cannon was uncertain about it all.
‘I can’t go provide, I can’t go hunt, that’s who I am, I want to hunt!’ host Ray Daniels chimed in, which Cannon agreed with.
Once they started having children, Cannon struggled fitting into their new ‘hierarchy’ with Mariah assuming the ‘alpha’ position in their dynamic.
‘And then when you have children and the hierarchy of just your man s**t is like… “Wait I’m carrying a purse, the diaper bag. I’m standing on the corner. She rocking being all the alpha that she is!” And I believe she needs a dude like that. I’m just not that dude!’
Cannon praised Carey and stated they ‘never had problems’ but he struggled being a ‘participant’ in her world despite feeling like a ‘main character.’
‘And her and I never had problems. Never argued. Even with me struggling in this space, she’s so understanding, and so evolved and lives in her own world. When someone has their own world… their own scope, their own bubble, and you gotta be a participant in that… I’m a main character here!’
Cannon admitted he began ‘getting mad’ at himself and was not living to his full potential.
‘I was getting mad at myself,’ he continued. ‘It was like muscle atrophy. I had a gut. I’m not being the dude that god put me on this earth to be. And I was attempting to be the best husband I could be.’
‘She deserved it and the love kept me there,’ he said. ‘Made it work so well, cause I was like, “You need somebody. You need a support system.” You need someone that don’t want you for your money, that’s sincere. You need somebody that’s willing to build a family and raise some amazing kids together. And that was my goal.’
However, things still didn’t sit right with him.
‘But then there was this something constantly in me like,’ Nick admitted.
‘The man,’ Daniels said.
His relationship with Mariah made him second guess his professional career.
‘Even during the time I was married, I was still the chairman at Nickelodeon, I had a corner suite office over there,’ he said. ‘I was at Island Def Jam… but then I’m like, “Dang did I just get this job ’cause… Mariah’s over here selling tens of millions of records?” Yeah, give him the office!
‘So I’m like struggling with that. You’d see me in suits everyday, I’m trying to prove that I’m a man. There’s also the inner adolescent complex in me of like “I’m trying to prove that I’m a man” cause I’m standing next to a woman! The kid from Nickelodeon is with Mariah Carey? So that psychologically started to f**k with me.’
