New details have emerged about The Voice alum Ryan Whyte Maloney’s death, revealing that the 44-year-old singer died by suicide following an argument with his fiancĂ©e.
According to the report, which was obtained by on Thursday, January 30, Maloney fatally shot himself in Las Vegas after a dispute over his fiancĂ©e’s jacket. He died Tuesday, January 28.

Authorities say the couple had been drinking at the New York-New York Hotel and Casino before heading home. Per the report, Maloney’s fiancĂ©e repeatedly asked about her jacket during the ride, which allegedly made him upset. According to , the document states that Maloney called his fiancĂ©e a “b****,” pulled a handgun from the glove compartment, and stepped out of the car.
His fiancĂ©e reportedly told police she heard a gunshot and rolled down her window to call for him, but Maloney had already walked away. Moments later, she heard a second shot and saw him collapse to the ground with a bullet wound to the head, according to TMZ‘s review of the report. She immediately called 911, but when officers arrived at the scene, Maloney was pronounced dead. (The Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner also confirmed to on Tuesday that Mahoney’s cause of death was due to a gunshot wound in the head.)
Per TMZ, surveillance footage from MGM and New York-New York captured the incident. Maloney had posted a video to his Story from one of the locations the evening before his death. “Nine fine Irishmen for a private party tonight, and we will be rocking,” he said in a clip.
Maloney opened up about his mental health struggles in a Thursday, January 16 while reflecting on his time on season 6 of The Voice, where he was on ‘s team.
“When the opportunity arose to showcase my talent on The Voice, I was in a dire state during filming,” Maloney wrote. “Struggling financially, resorting to meager scraps for sustenance from the hotel garbage and hallways, while those around me reveled carefreely with their family like they were on vacation, I stood there, trembling with fear, merely surviving.”
He continued, “To the audience, I was just another act in the show, yet to me, that moment was a battle for my future, a testament to my dedication to my craft. Persistence is key – never falter, never surrender.”
Working as a songwriter, producer, and studio musician, Maloney stayed active in the music industry. He released several singles, including Don’t Put Me in a Box and Love with Nowhere to Go, and held a residency at Shelton’s Ole Red in Las Vegas. Over the years, he also performed alongside artists like Tim McGraw, Morgan Wallen, Rascal Flatts, Shakira, and Ed Sheeran.
