A mother and daughter are inviting strangers into their bond in a creative way.
A posted by Delilah (@delilah_isabel) went viral for revealing the unique tradition she and her mother share when traveling together: making playlists from songs recommended by strangers. Since the video was posted in April, it has received a million views and over 250,000 likes.
“My mom and I make crazy ‘strangers’ playlists when we travel together,” Delilah captioned the video. “We choose a theme and ask every person we meet for a song. This trip was, ‘What’s a song that reminds you of your mom?'”
“We talked to shop owners, drivers, waiters, hostesses and so many more—and heard some stories we’ll never forget,” she wrote. “We now have a one-and-a-half-hour playlist to remember all those people by, and I have 21 new songs that make me think of my mom.”
This is not the first time Delilah and her mother have gone on a playlist-making adventure. A glimpse into her TikTok profile reveals an abundance of travel content, including “strangers’ playlists” from other trips. A from April 2023 shows Delilah and her mother asking, “What is a song that makes you really…happy?” The pair apparently heard “amazing stories” between , and even wound up in strangers’ cars on mini adventures.
In the comments of her recent video, Delilah received questions about the courage to put herself out there and talk to strangers. While she acknowledged it’s not easy, she hinted that the best thing to do is just begin.
“I’ve talked to hundreds of people when making these playlists and still get nervous, but less and less each time,” she wrote. “You could even start by asking people you know.”
People in the comments appreciated Delilah’s efforts, offering their own that remind them of their mothers.
“My mom died a little over two years ago and I have been missing her so much this week. I asked her to send me a sign today and your video popped up. Thank you,” @sortaawesomemeg wrote.
“‘Slipping Through My Fingers’ by ABBA,” @chilliesha wrote. “Lost my mom two years ago, so I always think of her when I listen to that song.”
The success of Delilah’s TikTok video meant that the playlist of her travels didn’t end with the trip. Since commenters have offered their own stories, Delilah has been adding them to the playlist mentioned in the video, which now is up to 27 songs.
This is Delilah’s eighth “strangers’ playlist.” They are all visible on her Spotify account linked in her TikTok bio.
