Meghan Markle’s interaction with a group of well-wishers during a visit to Nigeria with this month has drawn comparisons with her mother-in-law, the late . Accordingly, footage of the moment has gone viral on social media site .
Meghan and Harry attended a series of events in the cities of Abuja and Lagos from May 10 to 12 at the invitation of Nigeria’s chief of defense staff this year. Many of these were connected with Harry’s veterans sports tournament,
The couple’s visit was made in a private capacity—having stopped representing the British monarchy overseas when they —and took place 34 years after King Charles and Princess Diana undertook a royal tour of the West African nation, as Prince and Princess of Wales, back in 1990.
During their time in the capital city of Abuja, Harry and Meghan attended a sitting volleyball event hosted by Nigeria Unconquered, a charity that coordinates the country’s involvement in the Invictus Games and works closely to support veterans.
Nigeria sent a national team to the games for the first time in 2023, for the event held in Düsseldorf, Germany.
At the sitting volleyball demonstration, Harry and Meghan had time to meet with community members who had turned out as spectators and supporters.
At one point, Meghan was warmly embraced by a group of women, posing for photographs and spending time chatting and greeting them.
Caught on camera, this moment was posted to TikTok by fan account, megsmarkle, gaining over 600,000 on the social media site since May 11.
The short video clip shows the duchess place her arm around one well-wisher while speaking to another, with the post being captioned: “She is so loved 🫶🏼.”
So far, the post has received in excess of 87,000 likes and over 1,500 comments, many of which have praised Meghan, with some fans comparing her to Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, whose impact when meeting members of the public became an important factor in her own popularity around the world.
“Just like LADY DIANA! ♥️,” wrote one fan of Meghan, referencing Diana’s maiden name of: Lady Diana Spencer.
“The people’s princess 🥹💜,” posted another using the moniker given to Diana after her . A further commenter added: “This is the level of ‘go where you’re celebrated’ I’ve been wishing for her since the beginning! Love seeing her this happy 😭.”
During her visit to Nigeria, Meghan thanked community members for “welcoming me home.”
This is a reference to a discovery made by the royal about her heritage which was revealed publicly in an episode of her in 2022.
At the time, Meghan told listeners that she had recently undergone genealogy testing which revealed she was
“I’m going to start to dig deeper into all this because anybody that I’ve told, especially Nigerian women, are like ‘What!'” she said.
Speaking at a Women in Leadership event in Abuja, Meghan said it was “flattering” to be included among a panel of the country’s empowered female voices.
Of her visit to the country, she said it was: “eye-opening and humbling to be able to know more about my heritage and to be able to know, this is just the beginning of that discovery.”
