Meghan Markle has not been on great terms with the royal family in recent years. The Duchess of Sussex famously left her working royal role alongside her husband, Prince Harry, back in 2020 after she felt the press was making it difficult for her to build a life in the United Kingdom — and the royals weren’t helping.
Meghan seemingly doesn’t have much of a relationship with Harry’s family (at least, not from the outside looking in), but she did recently wear a piece of jewelry that might have sent a powerful statement to her in-laws.
Harry has often said that Princess Diana would have absolutely adored Meghan. Diana was always one to do her own thing, and Meghan has proven to be the same way. Both Meghan and her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, often show respect for Diana by wearing her jewelry, and Meghan wore a cross necklace to an event in Nigeria back in May when she visited for a few days with Prince Harry.
“The cross pendant, while beautiful in its craftsmanship, could have carried a deeper significance,” James Harris of jewelry company Austen & Blake told GB News. “Traditionally, a cross pendant symbolizes faith, hope, and protection … In Meghan’s case, the cross might also be seen as a symbol of unity and peace, reflecting her commitment to humanitarian efforts and her dedication to fostering understanding across cultures.”
But it’s also possible that Meghan wearing a piece of Diana’s jewelry that represents unity and peace might be her way of sending a subtle message to the royal family that she wants both of those things. Meghan has not interacted much with the royal family, but that could still mean there is a part of her that wants peace for Harry’s sake.
