Singer Lana Del Rey’s comments about her husband at an event in Hollywood over the weekend have sparked speculation over her as-yet-undisclosed political leanings.
The “Born to Die” hitmaker, whose given name is Elizabeth Woolridge Grant, was on hand to present her friend and frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff with the Producer of the Decade award at Variety’s eighth-annual Hitmakers event.
While gathered at Hollywood’s nya WEST studio space, Del Rey made rare comments about her husband, Jeremy Dufrene, a Louisiana-based alligator tour guide with whom she in September.
Speaking about how Antonoff’s relationship with Margaret Qualley influenced her own romantic life, Del Rey said: “I saw the way he looked at her when he met her, and he’s a big reason why I waited so long to get married and why I met my amazing husband.”
The musician went on: “I really feel like there’s kind of a singer’s curse around meeting an honest partner who has no skin in the game, no dog in the race.
“And it’s super nerve-racking to have to hold on to an innocent perception of how things could go when you’re in an industry where maybe your values or your morals don’t quite match up with what’s going on—especially when people think that you probably don’t have any morals or values, so it can get all twisted up.”
Video footage of this particular part of her speech was shared by a Del Rey fan account on X, formerly , where it sparked discussion. A number of viewers surmised that the star was alluding to her own political beliefs being at odds with the majority in Hollywood, which has traditionally been seen as being the base of Democrat-leaning celebrities. This seemingly stems from unsubstantiated rumors online that her husband is a “MAGA supporter.”
Regalrumination.com has contacted a representative of Del Rey via email for comment outside of regular office hours.
“I just really like her music and I’m kind of glad that what the aesthetics of her music gesture towards is reflected in her politics and wasn’t just my imagination,” wrote Matt Braynard, executive director at Look Ahead America, which aims to “promote America First initiatives.”
“Lana singing [at] the 2025 Trump inauguration was not in my bingo card,” wrote one X user in reference to President-elect .
“I’m sure enough that Del Rey chose Trump. I love her,” commented another.
“Love this!—Lana Del Rey to sing ‘Hallelujah’ at the inauguration of Donald J Trump,” read another post. There have been no reports indicating Del Rey is to perform at Trump’s inauguration.
In apparent acceptance of the fact that Del Rey’s statement wasn’t explicitly clear in one direction or the other, another stated of the star: “She’s one of the only celebrities who is simultaneously transparent and a mystery. A true icon.”
While Del Rey has not publicly endorsed a candidate in this election cycle, she has criticized Trump in the past. In January 2021, months after his election loss to President , Del Rey spoke with Radio 1 about the former real estate mogul.
“The madness of Trump… As bad as it was, it really needed to happen,” she at the time. “We really needed a reflection of our world’s greatest problem, which is not climate change but sociopathy and narcissism. Especially in America. It’s going to kill the world. It’s not capitalism, it’s narcissism.”
Shortly after her wedding, Del Rey faced accusations from a faction of social media users of marrying a “potential MAGA supporter,” after unverified screenshots purported to show Dufrene mocking masks and vaccinations in a post during the COVID-19 pandemic. Another unverified post mocked transgender people.
Posts on such matters are not currently on Dufrene’s and accounts, which are largely used to showcase his alligator tour guide business.
