King Charles came up with a very unusual nickname for Meghan Markle – and it seems to reveal how he really felt about his daughter-in-law.

Charles coined his own name for Meghan while she was still a member of the Royal Family. Harry and Meghan were married in May 2018 – but less than two years later announced they were stepping down from the Firm. Since then, relations between the couple and the royals have all but fallen apart. But prior to their marriage, Charles bestowed a telling moniker on the former actress.

According to royal expert Katie Nicholl, who wrote The New Royals: Queen Elizabeth’s Legacy and the Future of the Crown, “Charles reportedly nicknamed his future daughter-in-law ‘Tungsten’ because of her toughness and resilience.” Tungsten is a type of metal that is known for being extremely strong and hard to break.

It’s unclear if Charles still uses this nickname to describe Meghan. She and her husband are now all but estranged from the royal family after repeated criticisms of the monarchy – from their notorious Oprah interview, their Netflix series, various interviews, and in Harry’s memoir, Spare.

Indeed, relations are so bad that Harry’s older brother Prince William is said to have completely ‘cut ties’ with his sibling and his wife. Royal expert Ingrid Seward told the Mirror: “William is sensitive, he likes structure and has perseverance. He does not give up easily. His relationship with brother Harry upset him more than he would care to admit. But he found it easier to cut ties rather than allow himself to be continually annoyed.”

It is not known when the brothers last saw each other. In his 60 Minutes interview in January 2023, Harry was asked if he speaks to William or texts. He replied: “Currently, no. But I look forward to… I look forward to us being able to find peace.” The interviewer pressed on how much time it had been, to which Harry added that it had been “a while”.

While there appears to be little hope of the siblings finding the peace Harry spoke of, there was one person who a royal expert thinks could have brought them back together. Former BBC royal correspondent Jenny Bond believes their late mother Princess Diana was the only person capable of reuniting the two men and that she would have been heartbroken at their ongoing dispute. I think she’d be distraught that the boys are still feuding,” she previously told GB News. “But I think somehow she’d have got them together and just sorted it all out.”

She continued: “Harry is ‘the Spencer’ of the two of them. He is fiery, vulnerable, fragile. Very much in the way Diana was. He is complex like Diana was. Likable. Loveable. It is difficult. He’s forging his own way much like his mother did. He is the troubled one of the two.”

Harry was last in the UK for the Invictus Games’ 10th anniversary in May but failed to see any members of the royal family, including his dad, King Charles. The last time father and son duo were together was in February, when Harry jetted off to London following King Charles’s cancer announcement, However, their encounter at Clarence House lasted just 45-minutes.
