The packed roster of high-pomp royal events continues apace, even after all the excitement of Kate Middleton’s first official public appearance in six months at this weekend’s Trooping the Colour 2024. Monday marks Garter Day, where King Charles III, Queen Camilla, and a roster of other Ladies and Knights of the Order of the Garter, the monarchy’s oldest order of chivalry, participated in an ancient ceremony at Windsor Castle.
Charles, Camilla, Prince William, Prince Edward, Princess Anne, and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh all attended the event just two days after the Trooping the Colour parade festivities.
Kate, who is still receiving chemotherapy treatment for an unspecified form of cancer (as is King Charles), did not attend and is not expected to appear at the upcoming Royal Ascot, either, though she did communicate that she hopes “to join a few public engagements over the summer.” Kate has often attended the event since her first Garter Day in 2008, when then-boyfriend William received his knighthood in the order.
The royals donned ornate ceremonial garb including heavy blue velvet robes and red sashes, as well as hats topped with large ostrich plume feathers, for the traditional procession, which many watched from the sidelines with picnic lunches.
