King Charles is determined to establish a relationship with his two youngest grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, despite the physical and emotional distance that has developed since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s departure from the royal family. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex relocated to the United States four years ago, significantly limiting the King’s opportunities to see his grandchildren. Royal experts suggest that the monarch is now eager to bridge this gap.
Royal commentator Jennie Bond emphasizes the emotional pull of grandchildren, stating, “Having grandchildren is a powerful tug on the heartstrings. Little people who are part of your bloodline and have had nothing to do with family quarrels and tensions.” She told OK! magazine that King Charles “very much wants the chance to get to know Archie and Lilibet and to create some memories for them.”
The strained relations within the royal family, particularly following the release of Harry’s memoir, “Spare,” have only exacerbated the situation. The book included harsh critiques of various family members, including Queen Camilla, which have reportedly made reconciliation even more challenging. Christopher Andersen, a royal biographer, highlighted the difficulty, stating, “The one thing that Charles finds unforgivable is criticism of Camilla.” Andersen added that Harry’s portrayal of Camilla as the “villain” still deeply affects the King.
The King’s health issues further complicate the dynamics. Queen Camilla is reportedly keen on minimizing stress for King Charles, who is undergoing treatment for cancer. A source close to the situation claimed, “Camilla dislikes Harry and doesn’t want Charles to get stressed while he’s undergoing treatment, so she tries to limit interaction.” Despite this, the King remains hopeful for a reconciliation, especially through his grandchildren.
The distance and security concerns have prevented Harry and Meghan from bringing their children back to the UK frequently. However, royal author Tom Quinn suggests that the King is considering a visit to the United States to see his youngest son and grandchildren.
“Charles has had discussions about an official visit to the United States at some time in the future, and there is no doubt if it goes ahead, he would build in time to visit his youngest son and his grandchildren,” Quinn told The Mirror. However, he noted that “there are mountains of planning to be overcome before that becomes even a remote possibility.”
Queen Camilla is also believed to be supportive of strengthening family bonds. Recently, Charles sent Lilibet a “heartfelt gift and card” for her third birthday, signaling his desire to connect. This act reflects his longing to be remembered as a warm, friendly grandfather. “He is desperate to see them and hates the idea that Archie and Lily will not remember him,” Quinn said.
The potential visit to the U.S. underscores the King’s commitment to mending the fractured family ties. Jennie Bond hopes that the innocent presence of Archie and Lilibet might encourage Charles and Harry to “forgive, if not forget, the bitter rows of the past.” She added, “I fervently hope that Harry will not follow Meghan’s example of remaining obdurately estranged from her father and most of her family.”
