Keri Russell has looked back on her time performing as child star at , saying that girls who “looked like they were having sex” were removed from the lineup.
The 48-year-old actress was among a host of stars who appeared in the 1990s revival of . At the age of 15, she made her television debut as a Mouseketeer in The All New Mickey Mouse Club, staying between seasons 4 and 6.
It became a , and her cast mates included fellow future actor Ryan Gosling, plus budding pop stars Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, and JC Chasez from NSYNC.
Speaking about her time under a Disney contract, Russell said during a recent appearance on the SmartLess podcast that there were methods applied to weeding out certain female cast members.

“This seriously is the truth: Whenever the girls looked like they were having sex, they were like, ‘Uh get that one out of here,'” the screen star said. “And the boys stayed until they were, like, 25. They were like, ‘Uh, that one, she’s out.'”
“She looks like a breeder, get her out,” Russell jokingly added of the purported approach.
Russell went on to add that her time with Disney “was so fun. I mean, it was so cheesy looking back, but it was so fun.”

The screen star, who was 17 when she departed her role, made similar remarks when she appeared on Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s podcast Dinner’s on Me in July.
“Yeah, it’s usually, like, girls who looked like they were sexually active,” she said, per People. “Which, probably, I was one of the first. They were like, ‘She is out!'”
“Meanwhile, the boys stayed till they were like 19,” she added. “I was like, ‘By the way, I had sex with that person, so I know that they’ve had sex.’ For real.”
Russell also spoke about how she successfully avoided the pitfalls seen all too often when it comes to growing child stars.
“I think what’s really the creepiest part of kid acting is usually it’s one or two kids with all adults,” she explained. “So that really accelerates the adultification of everything. And for The Mickey Mouse Club, there were 19 of us. The adults were invisible to me.”
“So, I wasn’t completely alone with all the adults,” she added. “And I think that was helpful.”
During an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show last year, Russell spoke about spending her time on the set Florida with “really famous kids.”
“They were all very talented,” she recalled. “Christina, and Britney, and Ryan Gosling, and Justin—all those kids were 12 when I was 17. So I was a little older. I could drive. I was cool. But they were wildly talented.”
In an interview with W magazine back in August 2023, Russell, who was a keen dancer at the time she joined Disney, compared her talent to the others.
“I say this completely truthfully: I was literally the least talented one there. I’m not kidding,” she told the publication. “When I look at those kids, I’m like, why in the world did they pick me? Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling and Britney Spears. It was wild.”
Russell went on to star in the Disney classic sequel Honey, I Blew Up The Kid, but it was her acting career as an adult that really put her on the map.
In 1998, Keri landed the lead role in Felicity, for which she won a Golden Globe.
Since then, she has received acclaim for her performance in FX drama series The Americans, and in 2019, she joined the Star Wars family, appearing in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Russell is currently promoting Season 2 of political drama .
