Kate Middleton has a very specific summer goal. According to a royal expert, the Princess of Wales wants the rest of the summer to be easy-going for her and Prince William’s three children, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6. 

Since announcing her cancer diagnosis in March 2024, Kate’s provided one major update on her health. On June 14, 2024, one day before appearing at Trooping the Colour, Kate released a statement on Instagram. 

In it, she revealed she has “good days and bad days” and is learning to take “each day as it comes. She also noted her preventative chemotherapy treatment is “ongoing and will be for a few more months.” 

Kate’s cancer diagnosis came after she underwent abdominal surgery in January 2024. Since then, she’s remained out of the limelight, save for a much-talked-about Mother’s Day photo and the aforementioned appearance at King Charles III’s birthday parade. 

Wimbledon is tapped to be her next big appearance, as it’s a staple on Kate’s summer calendar. 

Kate doesn’t want this summer to be one she and William’s kids remember as a difficult time. According to Jennie Bond, a former BBC royal correspondent, “fun and carefree” is how she wants the rest of the summer to be for George, Charlotte, and Louis. (Maybe that’s part of the reason why Charlotte and George went to Taylor Swift’s Eras concert?) 

“Like Catherine herself has said, cancer treatment brings with it a large measure of uncertainty,” Bond told OK! (via Mirror). “And that must extend to whether she is able to spend part of the summer holidays at Balmoral.”

The Balmoral estate is located in Scotland. A favorite place of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s, it’s where royals typically end the summer. 

“If she does go, I’m sure the whole family will want to surround her with love, support, and renewed strength,” Bond said. “She, meanwhile, will want to make the summer months as fun and carefree for the children as she possibly can after everything she’s been through.” 

If the Wales family heads to Scotland, it would undoubtedly be a happy moment for King Charles, per Bond. 

“It’s been one heck of a year for the royal family so far,” she said. “And nothing would please the king more than to have his close family gathered together in the peace of Balmoral for a time to take stock together, mark the passing of an incredibly difficult few months, and look to the future.” 

Were Kate and William to skip Balmoral, they’d likely spend time at Anmer Hall. The Norfolk, England, residence is where the family of five spent the weeks following Kate’s cancer diagnosis announcement. 

Bond continued, saying how Balmoral is synonymous with “family time” for British royals. “Just like in the late Queen’s reign, time at Balmoral is family time,” she said. 

“The summer stay up there has always been a time primarily for family, for a gathering in the peace of the Scottish countryside after the busyness and noise of their working lives in London and elsewhere.” 

“It’s a ‘breathe, relax and be still’ kind of place, and that’s what they all love about it. And, this year, more than ever, they all need to gather themselves and re-group for what they must all hope will be better days to come.”
