Princess Katherine and Prince William are gearing up to celebrate Prince George’s birthday next week, as the future king will turn 11 on Monday, the 22nd of July. Despite George’s young age, he already carries the significant responsibility of growing up as the future monarch of Great Britain, along with the worldwide renown that comes with it. Over the years, the youngster has celebrated his birthday in true royal style, with his parents hosting parties for their eldest child and their closest family and friends at their residence.
In 2019, George received an extra special birthday treat, celebrating his sixth birthday in opulent style while on a family holiday. William and Catherine, familiar with the idyllic, privately-owned Tresco Island, enjoyed this special place owned by King Charles and Queen Camilla. This meant George, Charlotte, and Louis could even enjoy a trip away with their grandparents. While William, Catherine, and their three children have vacationed on the Isles of Scilly off the Cornish coast and in Jordan in the Middle East, they frequently holidayed on the Caribbean island of Mustique.
The royals reportedly stayed in a luxurious villa costing £27,000 a week in 2019, where George marked his sixth birthday. The Prince and Princess of Wales released a snap of the young prince during their holiday as an official image. The stunning four-bedroom property, Villa Antilles, owned by William’s friend Andrew Dunn, boasts a 60ft infinity pool, jacuzzi, private staff, and incredible sea views of the neighboring island of Bequia in St. Vincent. A children’s room, complete with two bunk beds and nautical decor, including whimsical murals on the wall, added to the charm. The island has a strict no-fly zone, ensuring complete privacy for guests and residents. The couple was also joined by Princess Katherine’s parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, for their family getaway.
It’s no surprise that the couple loves Mustique, given the royal family’s connection to the island. Dolphin House, a large old granite rectory with spectacular views toward Round Island Lighthouse, is set in a large private walled garden. Downstairs, the property boasts a grand hosting space opening out to the sprawling walled garden and a separate cook’s kitchen. The staircase ascends past a series of bedrooms, including a little attic room, many enjoying views across Tresco’s rolling landscape and out to the sea.
Dolphin House’s website adds that the property is set amongst a walled garden, a veritable jungle of texture and color, perfect for games of hide-and-seek or sunlit afternoons of simply lazing. While the beautiful property is open to the public for booking, it has long been a favorite destination for the royal family when they holiday in the coastal town due to its privacy. Queen Elizabeth II’s sister, the late Princess Margaret, was a regular visitor. Her lady-in-waiting, Lady Anne Glenconner’s husband, Lord Glenconner, gifted Margaret a plot of land on Mustique, where she had a five-bedroom villa built, christened Les Jolies Eaux.
After Margaret’s marriage to photographer Anthony Armstrong-Jones broke down, Mustique became the royal’s refuge and sanctuary away from her life in the limelight. In 1996, the princess gave her property to her son, David Linley, now the 2nd Earl of Snowdon, as a wedding present. He later sold the villa in 1999 for £2.4 million to American businessman Jim Murray. The five-bedroom villa, located on the southern tip of Mustique overlooking the Caribbean Sea, can now be rented out for around £25,500 a week.
The Prince of Wales gave an update during a visit to St. Mary’s Community Hospital, built on the land he inherited when his father made him Duke of Cornwall after King Charles’ ascension to the throne. Indeed, the trip to the Isles of Scilly was the first since inheriting the Duchy of Cornwall and his first overnight trip since his wife announced her cancer diagnosis in a heartfelt video asking the public for privacy while she recuperated. Family was clearly on the prince’s mind despite the glorious weather. “My family are very upset that I’m here without them,” he told one member of the crowd. “My children will kill me if I don’t get back.” By the sound of things, it’s been a very enjoyable trip for William.
