“We Finally Buried the Hatchet!!!” the Material Girl singer wrote. “I went to see @eltonjohn perform on SNL this weekend!! WOW.”
In her caption, the when she “snuck out of the house” to see the five-time Grammy Award winner perform in Detroit.
“It was an unforgettable performance that helped me understand the transformative power of music,” she said. “Seeing him perform when I was in high school changed the course of my life. I had always felt like an outsider growing up and watching him on stage helped me to understand that it was OK to be different-to stand out- to take the road, less traveled by. In fact, it was essential.”
Madonna continued: “Over the decades it hurt me to know that someone I admired so much shared his dislike of me publicly as an artist. I didn’t understand it. I was told Elton John was the musical guest on SNL and I decided to go.”

The Michigan native added that she needed to “confront him” and revealed “the first thing out of his mouth was, ‘Forgive me.'”
“The wall between us fell down,” she said, noting that “forgiveness is a powerful tool.”
“Within minutes. We were hugging. Then he told me had written a song for me and he wanted to collaborate. It was like everything came full circle!!”
John commented on her Instagram in response: “@madonna Thank you for coming to see me at SNL. And thank you for forgiving me and my big mouth. I’m not proud of what I said. Particularly when I think about all the groundbreaking work you have done as an artist—paving the way for an entire generation of female artists to succeed and be true to themselves. You were also one of the very first people to in the 80s, bringing love and compassion to so many who desperately needed it.”
The continued, “I’m grateful we can move forward. 🙏🏻🚀 I’m increasingly distressed by all the divisiveness in our world at the moment. Both you and I have wholeheartedly been accepted and embraced by communities who are under threat around the world. By pulling together, I’m hopeful that we can make great things happen for those who really need support. And have a lot of fun doing it!! ❤️❤️🚀🚀.”
In a message shared to his Instagram Story, John called their meeting “a healing moment.”
2002
The legendary musicians’ beef first dates back to 2002 when John told U.K. news outlet Sky News that Madonna’s song Die Another Day, which was for the James Bond movie of the same name, was “the worst Bond tune ever.”
“It hasn’t got a tune. James Bond themes are usually very camp, and this one’s different,” the Hold Me Closer singer explained, per CBS News. “They should have gone for somebody like Lulu and Shirley Bassey, or maybe I’m in that league?”
He added, “I don’t think it’s the best Madonna record, and I’m a big fan.”
2004
Two years later at the Q Awards in 2004, John took aim at Madonna again. During his acceptance speech for the Classic Songwriter Award, he slammed the ‘s nomination for Best Live Act.
“Madonna, best f***ing live act? F*** off,” he said as the audience laughed. “Since when has lip-synching been live? Sorry about that, but I think everyone who when you pay like 75 quid to see them should be shot. Thank you very much. That’s me off her f***ing Christmas card list, but do I give a toss? No.”
At the time, Madonna’s representative Liz Rosenberg hit back at John’s remarks, noting that Madonna “does not lip-synch nor does she spend her time trashing other artists.” She added, “Elton John remains on her Christmas card list whether he is nice … or naughty.”
John later walked back on his comments, telling Access Hollywood that he was “unfair” to her, CBS News reported.
2011
However, in a 2011 interview with Rolling Stone, the Rocket Man artist doubled down on his lip-synching quotes.
“Anyone who lip-synchs should be shot. Just take ’em out on the street and shoot ’em. I think Madonna’s a fantastic showgirl—show-woman—and I’m a big fan of some of her records. I didn’t want to hurt her feelings, and subsequently, I’ve made up and apologized. I think she paved the way for everybody, but I am right. I’m right. Live means live.”
2012
Madonna was asked to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show in 2012, and John reacted to the news on Good Morning America by advising her to “make sure you lip-synch good,” Variety reported.
Later that same year, John told Australia’s Sunday Night that “her tour is a disaster.”
“If Madonna had any common sense, she would have made a record like Ray of Light, stayed away from the dance stuff and just been a great pop singer and made great pop records, which she does brilliantly. But no … And she looks like a f***ing fairground stripper.”
2023
By 2023, their feud seemed to cool. John praised the Like a Virgin singer for her “heartfelt tribute” during her Celebration Tour, which honored the millions of people who have died from AIDS.
“Thank you, Madonna, for your advocacy and compassion, and for raising important awareness of the ongoing mission to end AIDS,” he wrote via Instagram at the time. “With 39 million people living with HIV today, 9.4 million of whom are not currently on lifesaving treatment, we must keep using our voices and platforms to ensure everyone has the opportunity to live full and healthy lives.”
