After a turbulent relationship and the well-publicised breakdown of their marriage, King Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales, separated in 1992 – a decision so official that the British Prime Minister at the time, John Major, announced it.
The decree nisi was granted on 15 July 1996, with their dramatic divorce finalised on 28 August 1996. With Diana represented by Anthony Julius in the case, the couple left their marriage sharing custody of their two children, William and Harry. while the ‘Queen of Hearts’ didn’t receive a formal settlement in the divorce agreement, it was reported that she received a lump sum of £17million (equivalent to £42 million in 2024), a third of what she had originally asked for. This was alongside an annual payment of £400,000 (as reported in the New York Times at the time), which allowed her to maintain her private office.
This was reportedly Prince Charles’ ‘entire fortune’, with the now King’s former financial advisor, Geoffrey Bignell, telling a Sunday newspaper at the time that she had taken ‘every penny’ Charles had. She was also allowed to keep her ‘Princess of Wales’ title, but required to give up ‘Her Royal Highness’ title alongside any future claims to the royal family’s throne.
