In a meeting with King Charles where they “compared beekeeping tips”, former England football legend David Beckham was honoured as an ambassador for The King’s Foundation. Joy-filled photos released to celebrate Saturday’s announcement showed the pair sharing a laugh at Highgrove’s doorstep, while other snaps showed 49-year-old David testing his carpentry skills amongst foundation students participating in woodworking courses at the Snowdon School of Furniture.

Speaking about their meeting, David said: “Having developed a love for the countryside I’m also on a personal mission to learn more about rural skills which is so central to the foundation’s work.

“It was inspiring to hear from the King about the work of His Majesty’s foundation during my recent visit to Highgrove Gardens – and compare beekeeping tips!”

Since reportedly buying a converted barn in the Cotswolds, Beckham has posted on social media about his bee keeping. He uploaded an Instagram video on World Bee Day last year showing him working on a beehive and in another post he is pictured next to a hive with the words “Be kind & they will be calm”.

The football icon met King Charles in the verdant Royal gardens of Highgrove, the private country residence of His Majesty, to gain deeper insights into the charity’s operations. The former England captain also had a chat with students from the Metiers d’art Embroidery Fellowship, a programme run in partnership with CHANEL and Le19M.

On the day, David said: “I’m excited to be working with The King’s Foundation and to have the opportunity to help raise awareness of the charity’s work. I’ve always been keen to help young people to expand their horizons and I’m particularly looking forward to supporting the foundation’s education programmes and its efforts to ensure young people have greater access to nature.”

The King’s Foundation, which oversees Highgrove Gardens, was established by Charles when he was still Prince of Wales back in 1986. Its mission is to provide education and holistic solutions to today’s global challenges in a sustainable way.

It offers various educational programmes and courses centred around heritage and craft skills at Highgrove. In addition to its educational initiatives aimed at preserving traditional skills, the foundation, located at Dumfries House in East Ayrshire, strives to rejuvenate communities through urban regeneration and planning. It also promotes sustainable food production and teaches rural skills.

The former footballer joins other foundation ambassadors like The Repair Shop presenter Jay Blades, who represents building crafts, Alan Titchmarsh, who represents all thigs horticulture, and TV presenter and renovation expert Sarah Beeny, who covers buildings and heritage.
