The program may be terminated by the Department of Correction at any time with or without notice.\r\nSummary StatementA class incumbent performs at the advanced level and carries out preventative maintenance, HVAC maintenance and repair, and/or restoration activities in one or more of the traditional trades fields on structures, systems and equipment to help ensure efficient operation of a physical plant.\r\nCareer LadderUpon satisfactory completion of department promotional standards and job requirements, employees may be eligible to be promoted to the next level.\r\nEssential FunctionsEssential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class. Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.\r\n\r\n Performs preventative routine and complex maintenance repairs on interior and exterior building structures, fixtures and appurtenances; heavy duty structural and mechanical equipment or HVAC and other systems.\r\n � \r\n Performs restoration and renovation on facilities, builds partitions, shelving from sketches, plans or instructions, renovates furniture and equipment and designs layout to ensure most efficient use of space.\r\n � \r\n Recommends referral of jobs beyond financial or capability limits to private contractors.\r\n � \r\n Maintains and repairs compressor, pumps, hydraulic lifts, treatment and disposal plants and operates and maintains HVAC systems and complex plumbing projects.\r\n � \r\n Operates and maintains life safety devices such as sprinkler systems.\r\n � \r\n Makes necessary sketches and recommends changes to blue prints on any renovation or new installation to meet applicable class.\r\n � \r\n Oversees the work of skilled, semi-skilled maintenance, labor and inmate work force in performing specific assignments or in a training situation.\r\n � \r\n Maintains records of work performed, materials used and time spent on assignments and secures through established procedures, materials and supplies.\r\n � \r\n Maintains security of all tools, supplies, equipment and assigned inmates, participates in cell, building and grounds searches for contraband, weapons and escapees as required. \r\n\r\nJob Requirements\r\nJOB REQUIREMENTS for Correctional Officer/Physical Plant Maintenance Trades Mechanic I \r\nApplicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas: \r\n\r\n Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent. \r\n At least 19 and 1/2 years of age. \r\n Knowledge of operating and maintaining a variety of equipment, hand and power tools used in trades fields such as plumbing, carpentry, painting or HVAC. \r\n Knowledge of performing work in a variety of trades fields such as plumbing, carpentry, painting or HVAC. \r\n Possession of a valid Driver’s License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).\r\n\r\n\r\nAdditional Posting Information\r\n\r\nSelected incumbent’s annual base starting salary is $47,380. Upon successful completion of the Correctional Employee Initial Training (CEIT) course, and after being assigned to a facility, the salary will increase to $57,200. Additionally the incumbent will be eligible for a 5% shift differential if he/she works four or more hours between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m.\r\n\r\nThe Correctional Employee Initial Training (CEIT) program is approved by the Veterans Administration of Delaware State Approving Authority for the training of Veterans.\r\nDOC Special Requirement: Prior to institutional assignment, candidates must successfully complete all phases of an eleven- week Correctional Officer Basic Course. This course is administered by the Department of Correction at the Steven R. Floyd Sr. Training Academy. Coursework includes physical, classroom and hands-on training. Instruction is provided in the areas of inmate supervision, defensive tactics, riot control, weapons, report writing and emergency medical training.\r\nEmployees in a Correctional Officer (CO) series position will be eligible to retire under the provisions of HB363 if, at the time of retirement, they have completed twenty-five (25) years of pension creditable State service, and with at least twenty (20) of those years of pension creditable service as a CO series classified position.\r\n\r\nA writing sample will be requested at the time of interview.\r\n\r\n\r\nConditions of HireDOC: For admission to the State of Delaware Department of Correction Academy applicants who are made a conditional offer of employment shall be required to successfully complete a criminal background check, physical ability test to demonstrate fitness for duty, an approved psychological examination, pre-employment drug test and medical examination.
