The Hollywood elite have come to the defense of music legend Babyface, after two red carpet reporters at the stopped his interview mid-sentence to grab an interview with , the night’s eventual winner of Best New Artist and five other awards.
The video ran in its entirety on the Associated Press’ pre-show livestream on Sunday, February 2, going viral —for all the wrong reasons — before the Grammy Awards even started.
, Dionne Warwick and Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men were just some of the celebs who spoke out against the incident. One of the reporters apologized later during the red carpet coverage, and the Associated Press has also released an apology on (formerly ).
“I wanted to say that I’m really sorry about, um, interrupting Babyface earlier,” said AP’s Krysta Fauria after the incident. The Associated Press added later on X, “We are deeply sorry for cutting our interview with Babyface short on our YouTube livestream of the Grammys red carpet.”
For his part, Babyface, 65, whose real name is Kenneth Edmonds, has gotten praise for how he handled the ordeal. After hearing the commotion — which included one of the AP reporters calling out twice to Roan in front of the record producer while he was talking — he was the one to stop the interview. “You guys want to do that?” said the singer, who boasts 12 Grammys and 54 nominations. “Go do that.” He then walked off.
Babyface later commented to , “The best part of the night was reconnecting with old friends, meeting new artists, and feeling all the love in the room,” and “Much love to everyone who won and everyone out here making great music.”
“What a class act you are,” Kardashian wrote on . Stockman added in a video on the same platform that his friend is “a legend in the music business.”
“This is so disrespectful how Babyface was treated in this interview,” Kardashian wrote in her post. “Babyface has had such a significant impact on the music industry, in sooo many ways…He is a pioneer and deserves so much better than this. With decades of groundbreaking work as a songwriter, producer, and performer, he’s shaped the sound of multiple generations. I love you. And I am a forever fan.”
Stockman’s comment to account continued, “The music industry tends to have a really bad habit of doing very disrespectful things to people who should be honored.”
Warwick also vented about the moment on , writing, “13x Grammy Award winning Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds? Am I seeing this correctly?”
“But the way they played in your face,” Tamar Braxton wrote in a comment on post of him on the red carpet. “Unforgivable.”
