The network was eager to create a ratings bonanza, and what could be better than Harry and Meghan’s first joint interview in three years?

To boost ratings, the plan was to include some behind-the-scenes footage of Harry and Meghan with their kids, Archie and Lilibet, at their Montecito mansion. The idea was to show a family moment while discussing online safety, but as you might have guessed, things didn’t go as planned. At the last minute, this footage was scrapped, much to the dismay of the executives who were hoping for a high-impact segment.

Instead of the family footage, viewers were treated to a rather awkward and overly staged entrance where Harry and Meghan greeted the parents as if it were a surprise. The whole scene felt very orchestrated, with the camera angles and timing meticulously planned.

Things didn’t improve during the interview itself. Meghan was under the impression that the host would be Gail King, a familiar face at CBS, but it turned out to be Jane Pauley. Meghan was clearly not pleased. Each question was pre-approved by Harry and Meghan’s team, but CBS still had control over the interview’s content. Pauley threw in some unscripted questions that threw Meghan and Harry off guard.

One question about Meghan’s past struggles, which wasn’t part of the pre-approved list, particularly upset Harry. He was hoping the interview would focus on the charity’s message rather than bringing up past controversies. Meghan, meanwhile, was more focused on keeping the spotlight on herself, as usual. The interaction between Meghan and Harry during these moments was noticeably strained.

Another issue arose when the show featured a segment with the parents of a child who had tragically passed away. Meghan’s reaction was notably lacking in compassion, which contrasted sharply with her usually more empathetic public persona. She seemed frustrated that this segment was part of the show, believing it should have focused solely on her and Harry.

According to insiders, the entire interview was supposed to be about Harry and Meghan’s charity work, but without the promised behind-the-scenes footage, it fell flat. The program didn’t generate the excitement the producers had hoped for, and the focus shifted to Meghan’s personal narrative rather than the intended charity message.

After the show, Meghan reportedly had a meltdown, taking her frustration out on the producers. The experience left a bad taste, and it’s uncertain if they’ll work with CBS again.
